Heart and Lung Transplant Trust (Victoria) Inc. ("HLTTV") organized the Tour de Transplant, a 9 day cycling challenge from 22nd to 30th March 2014. The route covered 1,100km around Victoria and was led by Australian cycling legend Phil Anderson. Aside from completing the challenge, participants' goal was to raise money for HLTTV's Second Chance Accommodation Program.

Why 1,100km? To acknowledge the 1,100 Victorians who have received heart and lungs since transplants began at The Alfred Hospital, Melbourne in 1989.  The length of the ride is incredibly significant, as was the route itself which visits towns and communities which are and have been home to many of these transplant beneficiaries.

Read Brian's blog (one of our riders) about his experiences on the Tour here.

THE TOUR     For our riders, the Tour was a once in a lifetime chance to spend a week in the company of one of Australia's true sporting champions and pioneers. Phil was the first non-European to wear the yellow jersey at the Tour de France and he won 2 stages, he is also a Commonweath Games gold medallist.  Our riders were in training for many months to complete challenge.  Take a look at the Tour in the video.
All donations over $2 are tax-deductible and every $ you donate will go directly to help families. HLTTV has no staff and therefore no salary costs, it is run by volunteers, all of whom are either transplant recipients or are carers of recipients; so you can be sure your donation will directly fund accommodation for transplant families.

Donors often like to know how their money is being spent - $2,400 will help one family with accommodation for 3 months, being their required period of need post transplant; $4,800, two families; $7,200, 3 families; and $9,600, 4 families or one apartment for a whole year. We are currently only able to provide less than half of transplant families with accommodation. The need is both immediate and ongoing.

The Alfred is Australia's leading transplant hospital and both adults and children travel to it from all over Australia. The Second Chance Accommodation Program allows them to stay within walking distance of The Alfred so they can attend their frequent, often daily, checkups and rehabilitation which is crucial part of their recovery.

The Tour is raising funds for HLTTV’s Second Chance Accommodation Program.  A place for heart and lung transplant patients to call home while they undergo the most traumatic and stressful event in their lives.

Every $ you donate directly helps families; as HLTTV is entirely volunteer run, staff costs are nil.

The route took us from Melbourne to Geelong, where we started our journey and then up through Ballarat, Bendigo, Shepparton and to the border at Albury.
From there participants rode southeast over the Victorian Alps to Gippsland before the final stretch to Melbourne. Details here.

The length of the ride is significant -1km for every Victorian heart and lung transplant recipient.
The route visited towns and communities which are home to many of these recipients.  Each overnight stop was hosted by a local transplant recipient.
Meet them here.
